Recruiting
BSS has been subbing with mainly the same core people now for a few years, and we’re starting to see the limit. Practically all of our shows were done by one translator since gurren lagann ended with no translation checker and our editors were former quality checkers (and I think we’ve been doing pretty well considering everything). And with most of our releases ending up having a v2, we just really need more help. So here’s where you come in!
We’re looking for translators, translation checkers, editors, quality checkers, distro, basically everything but encoders and timers. What we’d also like are people from the other side of the world or maybe europeans since most of us are based in North America. This would allow us to be more flexible so that if some people are sleeping, then it’s more likely the others are awake and ready to help.
We’re a pretty loose bunch, so I’m sure that if anyone joins, they’ll be sure to have fun. We also play mahjong quite often together, so consider that a plus if you know how to play.
So, if you’re interested, hop on into #bss-recruits@irc.rizon.net and tell us what position you’d be interested in.

I’m willing to volunteer as an editor and I have 3-4 years of japanese classes under my belt so I think I would be great for spotting translation errors. I might also be willing to help with quality checking, heck I might even try translating if I keep my japanese dictionary beside me when there’s a word I don’t know.
I have next to no experience woth irc so it would be great if it would be possible to communicate by other means.
Cheers

Hmmm, it’s been a few months since i get involved with any anime translation, but if u guys dun mind the speed of which i work (due to my slow internet speed, so getting the raw will take time on my side, and also that i like to take my time in translating basically i’m lazy), u can email me. u can find me tru windows live messenger too.
If u ask me, i’d prefer the job of a TL-checker tho i was previously engeged in translation work. as for my japanese qualification, i’m a JLPT lvl 2 and have been learning japanese on my own for several yrs.
Btw, my experience in irc is also close to nth. :P

I’d like to do quality checking if there is still a need for it. I went onto the IRC channel, but there wasn’t anyone there (time zone differences most likely :P).
Also, I am in Australia, in a +10 time zone; so that would help with your issue of people sleeping I suppose.

@Dirac
Unfortunately, all of our work is done over IRC, so if it’s possible, we’d very much like for you to try it out and come talk to us.
@Densuke
We’re a pretty speed orientated group, so unless you’re willing to translate fast, then it probably won’t work out.

@hachi
Too bad then. haha…
but then again, so how long is ur limit (of waiting) from the time the show airs in japan up the sub is ready for release? cuz my fastest record was about 3-4 days from the airing day, and that’s cuz i was doing not only the translations, but also the timing and typesetting. lol.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
@Densuke
As far as I know BSS releases a episode within a day of airing.
October 26th, 2009 at 5:51 am
hachi, if you’re still looking for an editor, I’ll be willing to get in contact with you on IRC. I might as well tell you a bit about my background just so you know.
I’ve worked with a number of groups and have ran two myself:
sMi (Founder)
INP (Ran for a very short stint. Was only a few weeks before I realized they were helpless)
Rumbel
Tomodachi
Vegapunk
And some others that I worked in under an alias due to the series being licensed.
Series that I’ve worked on:
One Piece (Vegapunk, INP)- Timed, Edited, Minor TLc, Encode
Gintama (Rumbel-sMi) – Edited, Fine Timed, Typeset, QC
Ga-Rei-Zero (sMi) – Edited, Typeset, QC
Kurozuka (sMi) – Timed, Edited, Typeset, QC, Encode
Major S4 (INP) – Edited
Eyeshield 21 (INP) – Edited, Timed
Shikabane Hime (TMD) – Timed, Edited, Typeset
That’s just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Anywho, if you’re interested in my help let me know and I’ll check you guys out on IRC.

I forgot to add that I’d be willing to work as a QCer as well. I’m looking forward to your response. ;)
October 27th, 2009 at 11:05 am
Looking at the responses above and after checking out the recruit channel I feel I probably know the answer already, but is there any chance of an entry level position? I can tick the boxes for ‘other side of the world’ and ‘mahjong’, not the one for ‘experienced’ however.
Cheers; looking forward to seeing the releases from a reinvigorated BSS :)

This is a bit random but here are the BD Rips of Michiko e Hatchin Ep05 and Ep06, from my group. We pulled some money together and bought Vol 3. Blu-Ray disc. It was quite the process to get it all done. We used your subs if that was alright. Check them out, and see what you think.
Here’s the section of the site to download Michiko e Hatchin [BD Rips]

This post might be abit old (ok, maybe not THAT old =P) but i’ll ask anyway.
Do i have to know some japanese for a distro job?
How fast internet connection is required for a distro job?
I might be interrested in the distro job, mainly because i don’t know any japanese, i live in europe (denmark), and i got a pretty fast connection (60/60mbit).
